NEW YORK, August 2008 ~ Swimming Workshop applying the principles of the Alexander Technique
Swimming to improve your health, as a form of exercise, or to keep fit, is wholeheartedly recommended by nearly everyone dealing with health or fitness. For many, however, it can seem like too much work, or is just not enjoyable. The reason may well be that more often than not, people simply need to learn a different method of swimming from the one they learned as a child or adolescent. Not all swimming methods are the same, and likewise not all swim instruction methods are the same. If you want to maximise your health benefits you need to look into a completely different way of swimming and learn to swim Steph's Way of Swimming.
Thinking of taking the Plunge?
A fabulous opportunity to transform your Swimming experience with group and/or individual swimming lessons with Stephanie Dutton.
Stephanie Dutton is a Specialized Swimming Teacher from the UK and with over 25 years of experience. She trained as a student with Steven Shaw, who is the founder of the Shaw Method of Swimming in the UK. This new method of swimming applies the principles of the Alexander Technique.
The Alexander Technique works on the relationship between the mind and the body, helping us to unlearn automatic patterns of thought and action, which can have a detrimental effect on our health and well-being. It helps develop co-ordination, allowing greater ease and freedom of movement.
Workshops are being held in a beautiful heated indoor pool in Westchester County, New York.

Conquering Fear of the Water
- This course is designed for clients who have a fear of the water or lack water confidence
How do I overcome my fear of the water? The answer is simple ... SLOWLY.
Fear of the water is very real and not uncommon. For those it affects, it is neither irrational nor something to be minimised. No matter how long you have lived with your fear of water, or how severe it is, you can learn to overcome it and interact with the water in a positive way.
Lessons will be about feeling at home in the water, and gaining confidence. With support from your teacher, you will feel what it's like to move safely through the water. You will be taught how to connect and be calm with your breathing above and under the water. You will also learn how to gently drift into a floating position and how to calmly move from a horizontal float to a standing position.
- Group Lessons of 4 people maximum

Exploring & Developing Water Confidence
Many traditional approaches to swimming focus on getting across the pool; where the water becomes a challenge or an obstacle that you are to overcome. The water is never presented as something you want to work with or understand. As a consequence, people have learned to view their relationship with the water as an adversarial one. Those who were introduced to swimming from this standpoint were never taught the fundamentals of breathing, balance, feeling support from the water, and developing water confidence skills, which we will apply in this class.
Lessons will focus on becoming comfortable with breathing, floating, and exploring movement of stroke(s) with ease and confidence.

Most recreational swimmers initially dismiss Butterfly because it apparently requires such a high degree of strength, mobility and co-ordination.
But it would be a shame to exclude it from your swimming regime simply because it looks so difficult. In fact, it's a very graceful stroke, and as a swimming teacher I like my swimmers to have the opportunity to have fun learning it.
